UAE's First Flying Taxi Station Named DXV Near Dubai International Airport
The UAE has unveiled its first commercial vertiport for flying taxis, named Dubai International Vertiport (DXV), strategically located near Dubai International Airport (DXB). This milestone was confirmed on Thursday with the official approval of its design, marking a significant step toward the implementation of the country's air taxi infrastructure. DXV is set to be operational in 2026, and it is the first of four vertiports being developed as part of Dubai’s initial air taxi network.
Design and Development
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) granted the green light for the technical design of DXV, which is being developed by Skyports Infrastructure in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Joby Aviation. The approval allows Skyports to move forward with constructing the first facility under the newly established UAE Vertiport Regulations.
DXV will serve as a dedicated takeoff, landing, and service area for flying taxis. It will span 3,100 sqm and will include electric charging stations, a passenger waiting area, security procedures, and firefighting infrastructure. The facility is designed to accommodate 42,000 landings and 170,000 passengers annually. It is expected to handle the first commercial air taxi services starting in Q1 2026.
A Major Step in Urban Mobility
According to GCAA Director-General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the approval of DXV's design is a groundbreaking achievement that "will redefine urban mobility and set global benchmarks for integrating emerging aviation technologies." This regulatory milestone is crucial to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of air taxis in the UAE, aligning with the nation’s vision for cutting-edge transportation solutions.
Strategic Network Expansion
DXV is just the beginning. Four vertiports are planned for the first phase of the air taxi project, which will include strategic locations such as Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. The approval of the design for DXV is a key part of a broader effort to roll out air mobility systems in Dubai, in line with the UAE's commitment to innovation and sustainability in aviation.
Regulatory Framework for Future Air Taxis
The regulatory framework surrounding air taxis is still evolving, but GCAA’s involvement ensures a focus on safety, including fire safety measures for both battery and traditional fuel fires. Skyports CEO Duncan Walker emphasized that the approval of DXV will facilitate the scale-up of air taxi operations across the UAE, solidifying the country’s position as a leader in the emerging air mobility industry.
