UAE Ministry of Sports to Launch ‘Chess Digital League’ for Students
The UAE Ministry of Sports is set to launch the ‘Chess Digital League (CDL)’ on April 14, 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education UAE and the UAE Chess Federation, under the slogan “Your Move. Your Moment.”
The initiative aims to promote school sports and identify young talent by providing students with a competitive digital platform to showcase their strategic thinking and cognitive skills through chess.
Open to students across all school cycles (1, 2, and 3), the league will be conducted in a cutting-edge digital environment, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to integrating technology into education and extracurricular activities.
The qualifying rounds will take place over two days—April 14 and 16—where students will compete within their respective categories. The top six players from each cycle will advance, resulting in 18 finalists who will compete in the concluding ‘Masters’ round to determine the overall champion.
The competition offers a prize pool exceeding AED 60,000, adding to its appeal and encouraging wider participation among students nationwide.
Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Undersecretary for Sports Development and Competitiveness and President of the UAE School and University Sports Federation, emphasized that the league plays a crucial role in strengthening school sports and ensuring continuity of student activities within a safe and competitive environment.
He noted that initiatives like the CDL contribute to developing future champions, highlighting that nurturing talent begins at the school level. The competition is also expected to enhance decision-making, analytical thinking, and strategic planning skills among participants.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Qasim, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, stated that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s vision of fostering a supportive and innovative learning environment. He added that focusing on mind sports such as chess helps improve critical thinking and competitiveness, while encouraging creativity and positive engagement among students.
Officials highlighted that the CDL reflects a strategic national partnership between key entities, aimed at enriching student experiences and preparing a generation capable of contributing to the UAE’s future in sports and innovation.
The launch of the Chess Digital League underscores the country’s broader efforts to integrate education, technology, and sports, reinforcing its position as a leader in developing holistic student talent.
