UAE and WIPO Sign Landmark MoU to Strengthen Intellectual Property Ecosystem
Agreement reinforces UAE’s commitment to innovation, global collaboration, and policy integration
In a significant move to bolster its intellectual property (IP) landscape, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The partnership aims to elevate the UAE’s IP ecosystem in line with international standards and accelerate national policy development across innovation, education, and industry.
The MoU was formalized during the UAE delegation’s participation in the 66th meeting of WIPO member states in Geneva, signaling a strategic step in the country’s pursuit of becoming a global hub for innovation and creativity.
His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, described the agreement as a pivotal milestone toward establishing a modern and robust IP framework in the UAE.
“This MoU reflects our leadership’s vision of creating a comprehensive legal and service environment that safeguards innovators’ rights and strengthens a knowledge-driven, innovation-led economy,” said H.E. Bin Touq.
He added that WIPO’s partnership will accelerate the integration of global digital tools, enhance legislative frameworks, and build capacity across key sectors. These initiatives are aligned with the national goals of We the UAE 2031, which aims to position the UAE as a global center for the new economy and creative industries.
The agreement was signed by H.E. Bin Touq and WIPO Director General Daren Tang. Under the agreement, both entities will collaborate on multiple fronts, including digital transformation, joint project development, and capacity building for institutions and individuals. The MoU also introduces a joint working group that will monitor implementation, share technical reports, and revise action plans based on progress.
One of the key focuses of the partnership is to enhance policy integration across education, industry, innovation, and intellectual property. By leveraging WIPO’s global expertise, the UAE intends to amplify the competitiveness of its creative and innovation sectors at both regional and international levels.
This collaboration further affirms the UAE’s active role in shaping global intellectual property policies and underscores its ongoing efforts to foster a resilient, technology-driven economy while protecting the rights of inventors and creators across all vital sectors.
