Smashing his way into the book of history, a remarkable hundredth title for Federer in Dubai
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 03 March 2019: The whole Dubai stood waiting with fingers-crossed and breath-held to watch the 37-year-old Swiss master take against the Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas in the mens final at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, on Saturday as the 20-time Grand Slam champion smashed it to his hundredth title.
While tallying up his victories to a mighty 100, the title will also mark Roger Federers eighth Dubai Crown. The match saw an easy win for the maestro with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the opponent who perhaps was himself inspired by the champion, as a child. The spectators at the finals witnessed a graceful play of tennis by the former world number one with his elegant volleys and immaculate drop shots. With each point he gained, the fans cheered and roared for their all-time hero.
While handing over the trophy to Dubais latest champion, Shaikh Hasher Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, President, Tennis Emirates (TE) was joined by Alison Lee, Executive Vice President, ATP Tour, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Dubai Duty Free, Ramesh Cidambi, COO, Dubai Duty Free and Salah Tahlak, Executive Vice President, Corporate Services and Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and Tournament Director.
The champion was awarded a winners cheque of $565,635 (Dhs 2.08 million), while Tsitsipas a quarter-finalist on debut last year and a champion last Sunday at the Marseille Open took home the second best prize of $283,880.
