Sharjah Unveils Dh750 Million Road Development Programme to Enhance Connectivity with Dubai

Sharjah is set to significantly improve connectivity with Dubai through a comprehensive Dh750 million road infrastructure programme designed to ease congestion, create new transport corridors, and enhance mobility for thousands of daily commuters traveling between the two emirates.

The ambitious initiative was announced by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and includes the construction of a new underground tunnel in Al Taawun, the development of Noor Road, and enhanced connections to major UAE highways.

The projects are expected to transform traffic movement between Sharjah and Dubai while supporting long-term urban development and economic growth.

Al Taawun Tunnel to Reduce Congestion

At the heart of the programme is the Al Taawun Tunnel, a major infrastructure project designed to provide a direct connection to Dubai through Al Nahda Bridge.

The dual-carriageway tunnel will run beneath the existing road network, allowing vehicles to bypass heavily congested surface roads and intersections. The project aims to address increasing traffic volumes along Al Taawun Road, one of the busiest commuter routes linking Sharjah and Dubai.

Authorities expect the tunnel to significantly reduce congestion around Al Taawun Roundabout by diverting a substantial amount of through traffic underground, resulting in smoother traffic flow and shorter travel times.

Noor Road to Create New Entry Point into Dubai

Sharjah is also developing Noor Road, a new route extending from Al Orooba Street directly towards Dubai via Al Nahda Bridge.

The road is expected to serve as an alternative corridor for motorists travelling between the two emirates and will contribute to the emirate’s efforts to expand access points and improve connectivity.

According to Sheikh Dr. Sultan, Noor Road is scheduled to open by the end of 2026. Once completed, the route will provide improved access between residential and commercial districts in Sharjah and neighbouring communities in Dubai.

Improved Access to Major Highways

The road development programme will also strengthen links to key national transport corridors, including Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The new tunnel and associated road upgrades are expected to provide motorists with more direct access to destinations across the UAE while reducing dependence on congested local routes.

In addition, the projects will improve connectivity to Expo Centre Sharjah. Directional signage will be installed to help visitors access the exhibition venue and its parking facilities more efficiently.

Long-Term Benefits for Residents and Businesses

The Sharjah Ruler emphasized that the Dh750 million investment is intended to deliver lasting benefits for residents, commuters, and visitors.

The new road network is expected to reduce pressure on existing roads, improve travel times, and facilitate easier access to residential areas, business districts, and major attractions.

Beyond easing traffic congestion, the projects are designed to support broader urban development objectives and strengthen the relationship between Sharjah and Dubai.

Vision for Greater Regional Connectivity

While an official completion date for the Al Taawun Tunnel has yet to be announced, Noor Road is expected to become operational by the end of 2026.

Sheikh Dr. Sultan highlighted that the initiative represents more than a transportation upgrade, describing it as a strategic effort to create a new level of openness and accessibility for the emirate.

“We are opening these internal areas to our neighbours,” Sheikh Dr. Sultan said, reaffirming Sharjah’s commitment to welcoming residents, businesses, and visitors while enhancing regional connectivity across the UAE.

The road development programme is expected to play a vital role in supporting future growth, improving commuter experiences, and strengthening transportation links between two of the UAE’s most populous emirates.
