EHS to Introduce Genetic Testing in Premarital Screening for UAE Nationals in 2025
The Emirates Health Services (EHS) announced that genetic testing will become a mandatory component of premarital screening for UAE nationals starting January 2025. This initiative supports the "Emirati Genome Program," aimed at reducing the prevalence of genetic diseases and promoting a healthier future for Emirati families.
According to His Excellency Dr. Essam Al Zarooni, Acting Executive Director of the Medical Services Sector at EHS, this step represents a transformative advancement in preventive healthcare. He noted that integrating genetic testing into premarital screening will help minimize the risk of congenital disorders, promote informed family planning, and curb the spread of genetic conditions.
“This initiative aligns with ‘The National Genome Strategy’ and will contribute to creating a robust genetic database for UAE nationals, aiding scientific research and enabling early medical interventions to improve public health outcomes,” Dr. Al Zarooni said.
The new screening will test for 570 genes linked to over 840 medical conditions, identifying genetic mutations that could lead to inherited disorders. The process involves analyzing blood samples from individuals planning to marry, with results delivered within 14 days.
Couples found to share genetic mutations will receive counseling from a dedicated team of geneticists and family physicians to guide them in making informed decisions about marriage and future family planning.
Genetic testing will be available at 22 EHS-affiliated health centers across the UAE, including facilities in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Appointments can be booked through the EHS smart app or by calling 8008877.
This initiative underscores EHS’s commitment to enhancing preventive healthcare, reducing the burden of genetic diseases, and improving the overall quality of life in line with the "We the UAE 2031" vision and the UAE Centennial 2071 goals.
