Dubai Culture joins hands with DEWA to Celebrate International Museum Day in Dubai

The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirates dedicated entity for heritage and culture, joined hands with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to mark the International Museum Day celebrations in Dubai. The activities were held at Dubai Museum, part of the historical Heritage Sites managed by Dubai Culture.

The International Museum Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding to encourage cooperation and peace among society museums worldwide.

The event was attended by Dr. Salah Al Qassim, Advisor to the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and Abdullah Al Mutairi, Consultant for Museum and Heritage at the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).

In 2014, more than 35,000 museums in over 140 countries from all continents took part in the International Museum Day celebration. This years theme was Museums for a sustainable society. It put the spotlight on the role of museums in raising public awareness about a need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and uses resources in a way that respects living systems.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA said: We are marking the International Museum Day, whose theme this year is Museums for a Sustainable Society, with Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, which works to enrich the cultural landscape by creating a sustainable cultural environment, and nurturing talents to promote the cultural diversity and social cohesion.

It is one of the factors common to all plans, programmes and initiatives across all our sectors and activities. To achieve our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, and to establish sustainability as an integral part of DEWAs strategy, we have aligned it with the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021. DEWA adopts initiatives and programmes that support the sustainable development, aim to rationalise use, conserve natural resource, and protect the environment. In line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to diversify the energy mix and demand-side management we support these international and society initiatives to instill a culture of conservation among all society, DEWA organised a lecture on conservation at Dubai Museum today to conserve natural resources and ensure their sustainability for generations to come.

The theme of this years celebration complements the commitment of our leadership to promote sustainable development and a key sub-theme of the Expo 2020 Dubai.
We are delighted to have taken part in a global event that highlights the essential methods of creating a better place within the communities that we live in and display this through the cultural & heritage offerings in the city. We appreciate the significant role that the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has played in ensuring our community is aware about eco-friendly practices.

He concluded: Museums serve as an institution that plays an important role in demonstrating how our society has evolved and the various measures undertaken by our forefathers in preserving the environment. By educating our youth about eco-friendly practices we are committed to instilling a sense of responsibility while providing the best of environments for the younger generation and for the many generations to come.

Dubai Museum teamed up with DEWA to host a series of informative and fun-filled activities to educate school students about sustainable practices.

The museum also showcased the UAEs rich heritage through re-usable materials taken from local palm trees, which were used to make household necessities including clothes and carpets. Students from the Heritage Centre schools also presented the art of making ropes and drying dates to visitors.
