Azizi Developments has signed a major technology contract to establish a new greenfield steel rebar rolling mill at Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing arm, Azizi Industries. The project is designed to deliver 600,000 tons of annual production capacity and strengthen the group’s construction supply chain control.

The core technology package for the rolling mill has been awarded to POMINI Long Rolling Mills S.r.l., a global specialist in long-product rolling mill engineering, while DASTUR Engineering International GmbH has been appointed as principal consultant.

Vertical integration to secure supply chain

The developer said the move reflects a strategy of vertical integration, bringing rebar production in-house rather than relying on third-party suppliers. As one of the UAE’s largest private developers, the group identified reinforcing steel as a critical construction input where quality control, supply predictability, and cost stability are essential.

Company executives said internal production will provide direct oversight of material standards, reduce exposure to supplier-side disruptions, and support delivery timelines across large-scale projects.

The contract signing took place in the presence of Mirwais Azizi, Founder and Chairman, Farhad Azizi, Group CEO, and Ernesto Bottone, CEO of POMINI Long Rolling Mills.

Advanced rolling mill specifications

According to project details, the new mill will process 150mm x 150mm x 12,000mm cast billets into high-strength quenched and tempered reinforcing bars compliant with BS 4449 steel grades.

Key technical features include:

1. 600,000 tons per year designed production capacity

2. Rolling stands arranged in roughing and intermediate/finishing groups

3. Central rolling line for larger diameter bars up to 50mm

4. High-speed lateral finishing block for smaller diameters down to 8mm

5. Spooler line for 8mm–16mm rebar coils

6. Straight-length production line for 8mm–50mm bars

7. Focus on dimensional accuracy and high throughput productivity

Strategic KEZAD location supports national goals

The KEZAD site was selected due to its growing role as a heavy industry and manufacturing hub in Abu Dhabi. The investment supports broader UAE industrial policy objectives, including expanding domestic manufacturing capacity and reducing reliance on imported construction materials.

Company leadership said the partnership with POMINI ensures the facility will be built to international engineering standards, while aligning with the UAE’s long-term infrastructure and industrial growth pipeline.
