American University of Sharjah Climbs QS Rankings, Strengthening Global Academic Standing

American University of Sharjah (AUS) has recorded notable progress in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject 2026, with multiple disciplines improving their global positions and several new subjects entering the rankings for the first time.

The latest results highlight AUS’ growing international reputation across a diverse range of academic fields, underpinned by continued investment in research excellence, innovative teaching methods, and strong industry engagement.

Strong national and global performance

In the broad subject rankings, AUS maintained its leadership within the UAE, ranking first in Arts and Humanities (333 globally), third in Social Sciences and Management (331 globally), and fourth in Engineering and Technology (311 globally).

Across narrower subject areas, the university secured the top position in the UAE in Architecture and the Built Environment, as well as in Linguistics and Accounting and Finance. It also ranked second in Materials Science and Civil and Structural Engineering, and third in Business and Management Studies and Economics and Econometrics.

AUS further placed among the top five universities in the UAE across several disciplines, including Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, and Chemistry.

Significant upward movement globally

Globally, AUS demonstrated strong upward momentum, with Architecture and the Built Environment climbing approximately 60 places. Computer Science and Information Systems rose by more than 130 places, while Mathematics improved by around 150 places. Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Chemical Engineering also recorded significant gains.

Research and innovation driving growth

According to Tod Laursen, the improved rankings reflect the collective efforts of faculty, students, and researchers in advancing knowledge and addressing real-world challenges.

AUS’ research ecosystem includes six research centres and 22 research groups, supporting interdisciplinary work in areas such as sustainability, artificial intelligence, water and energy systems, and advanced materials. These initiatives align with global sustainability goals and contribute to the United Arab Emirates’s vision for innovation and technological leadership.

The university also strengthened its global footprint through more than 40 industry and institutional partnerships signed in 2025, enhancing research collaboration and academic impact.

Focus on employability and student success

AUS continues to emphasise a hands-on, student-centred learning approach that bridges academic theory with practical application. Its strong performance in employer reputation indicators reflects high demand for graduates across sectors including engineering, business, architecture, and the sciences.

With sustained investment in research infrastructure and academic innovation, AUS is well-positioned to build on its momentum and further enhance its standing both regionally and globally.
