UAE Residents Urged to Help Rescue Stranded Sea Snakes on Beaches

Marine experts are urging residents to take action if they encounter stranded sea snakes along UAE coastlines, stressing that these animals are likely unwell and in urgent need of help.

According to SeaWorld Yas Island Abu Dhabi, sea snakes found on beaches are typically dehydrated, sick, or disoriented, as they are species that normally remain in the water.

Rob Yordi, Zoological Vice President at the facility, explained that misconceptions about sea snakes often lead to fear-driven reactions, despite the animals being non-aggressive toward humans.

Why Stranded Sea Snakes Need Immediate Help

Sea snakes, commonly found in the Arabian Gulf, are highly adapted to marine life and cannot survive long on land. Prolonged exposure to sun and dry conditions can quickly worsen their condition.

Yordi noted that while the species is venomous, it rarely poses a threat to humans. Instead, sea snakes play an important ecological role by maintaining balance in marine ecosystems through controlling fish populations.

Rescue Efforts Expanding Across Abu Dhabi

SeaWorld Yas Island Abu Dhabi has developed one of the region’s largest sea snake rescue programmes, handling nearly 100 rescues to date. The initiative includes public awareness workshops launched in 2024, particularly targeting coastal areas such as Saadiyat Island, where most sightings occur.

These workshops train participants—including hotel staff and beach teams—on how to safely respond until professional rescuers arrive.

What To Do If You Spot a Sea Snake

Authorities advise the following steps:

  • Do not touch the snake directly or attempt to harm it
  • Use a container (like a bucket) to gently contain it if trained to do so
  • Send a photo and location pin to rescue teams
  • Keep a safe distance and monitor the situation until help arrives

Quick action is critical, as stranded sea snakes can deteriorate rapidly in the heat.

Changing Public Perception

Officials say public awareness is improving, with more residents now reporting sightings instead of ignoring or harming the animals. This shift is helping increase survival rates and supports broader conservation goals.

The initiative reflects growing efforts across the UAE to promote marine conservation, responsible wildlife interaction, and community engagement.
