UAE residents can soon trek across the desert with Camels!!

Do you think you have what it takes to complete a 1,000 km trek across the UAE desert?

UAE residents can soon embark on an extraordinary cultural journey: a 1,000 km heritage desert trek on camelback, organised by Active Abu Dhabi under the banner of the new Misrah initiative. Starting August 21, 2025, this month-long expedition will offer 100 final participants a transformative experience of Emirati culture and tradition.

The adventure begins with a training phase open to 500 selected UAE citizens or residents between ages 18 and 25. Participants will hone desert survival skills, camel care, and saddle assembly, alongside workshops in shepherding tools, folk arts, storytelling, coffee preparation, and traditional hospitality customs. Drawing from deep-rooted Bedouin practices, they’ll master camel anatomy, ride confidently, and assemble saddles using indigenous tools like water bags and straps.

Upon completion of training by October 19, the top 100 are chosen for the second phase: trekking across the UAE’s desert over 30 days using only traditional transportation modes and foot travel. This immersive route is designed to mimic the journeys of Bedouin ancestors, passing through desert landscapes that reflect Emirati heritage and resilience.

More than an endurance challenge, Misrah celebrates national identity and intercultural unity. Participants will sleep under starry skies, carry their own supplies, develop physical stamina, and build camaraderie in camps along the route. As a cultural exchange platform, it strives to deepen respect for Emirati values and share them with younger generations.

Active Abu Dhabi’s Misrah isn’t just a trek; it’s a living bridge between past and future, honoring traditions through firsthand experience.
