UAE launches 6G initiative following record-breaking first test in the Middle East

The UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has officially launched the country’s 6G Initiative, marking a major step in the nation’s roadmap toward next-generation connectivity. The announcement follows the successful completion of the first 6G Terahertz (THz) pilot test in the Middle East, conducted by e& UAE in collaboration with New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi.

The pilot, held in October, achieved a record-breaking throughput of 145 gigabits per second (Gbps) — the highest ever recorded in the region. The demonstration showcased 6G’s capability to deliver ultra-high-capacity, low-latency connections, enabling transformative technologies such as holographic telepresence, extended reality (XR), digital twins, and terabit-class backhaul networks.

The TDRA stated that the 6G Initiative will bring together federal and local government entities, telecom operators, research centers, and global technology companies to drive the country’s 6G research, development, and deployment strategy.

“We are building on a legacy of innovation and achievements, striving together toward an intelligent, hyper-connected society that fosters innovation and national prosperity,” said Engineer Mohammed Al Ramsi, Deputy Director General for the Telecommunications Sector at TDRA.

The UAE’s latest milestone aligns with its vision to position itself as a global technology leader and reinforces its commitment to developing advanced communications infrastructure to support future smart cities, digital industries, and AI-powered economies.
