UAE Extends Distance Learning After Spring Break; Remote Work Allowed for Some Parents

The Ministry of Education has announced the continuation of distance learning across schools nationwide for two weeks following the spring break, as part of a broader effort to safeguard students while ensuring uninterrupted academic progress.

The decision applies to all nurseries, kindergartens, and public and private schools, covering both students and teaching as well as administrative staff. The spring break, which was brought forward earlier, runs from March 9 to March 22, with the third academic term set to begin on March 23 in a remote format.

Authorities confirmed that the situation will be reviewed on a weekly basis, with updates communicated through official school channels. Private institutions have also been given the option to request a return to in-person learning, subject to approval based on operational needs and coordination with relevant authorities.

Similarly, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced that universities and higher education institutions will continue distance learning for the same two-week period after the break. Institutions will retain flexibility in determining arrangements for academic and administrative staff.

In a related move, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources introduced flexible remote work arrangements for federal employees who are caregivers. The measure applies to parents of children in nurseries through Grade 8, provided their roles are compatible with remote work and in line with internal policies.

The decision follows earlier precautionary measures, including a shift to online classes in early March and the advancement of the spring break schedule, aimed at maintaining safety while ensuring continuity in education across the UAE.
