Abu Dhabi Schools Tighten Attendance Rules for Distance Learning

Private schools across the emirate are strengthening attendance monitoring for online classes following updated guidelines issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek), reinforcing that distance learning must meet the same standards as in-person education.

Under the new framework, schools are implementing structured, data-driven systems to track absences, identify patterns early, and ensure both academic accountability and student well-being. Authorities have emphasised that remote education is not a reduced form of schooling, but a different mode of delivery that requires equal rigour in learning outcomes, curriculum coverage, and teaching quality.

As part of the updated policy, schools are required to notify parents of any unexplained absence within 120 minutes of the start of the school day. Absences must also be clearly categorised as authorised or unauthorised, with approved reasons including medical cases, family emergencies, travel, bereavement, and participation in official events.

Education leaders say the move has prompted the adoption of advanced tracking systems that combine technology with human oversight. At GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi, attendance is recorded using integrated digital platforms, allowing real-time monitoring and early intervention when irregular patterns emerge.

School officials highlighted that even authorised absences are closely monitored, with repeated patterns triggering “at risk” flags. Immediate follow-ups are initiated if students miss multiple lessons in a single day, ensuring that attendance issues are addressed proactively rather than retrospectively.

Institutions are also shifting towards early intervention strategies, focusing on identifying trends over time instead of isolated incidents. Schools now track indicators such as multiple absences within a short period or missed lessons in a day, enabling timely support for students.

At The British International School Abu Dhabi, educators emphasised the importance of clear communication with families to manage attendance effectively. The school has also introduced flexible virtual learning arrangements for students in different time zones, while maintaining strict monitoring of engagement.

Other institutions, including Shining Star International School Abu Dhabi, have reinforced verification processes by requiring documented evidence such as medical reports or travel records. Absence approvals проходят through multiple administrative levels to ensure transparency and consistency.

Meanwhile, Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi has adopted a tiered, student-focused approach that combines structured monitoring with personalised engagement, recognising the unique circumstances of each family.

The updated attendance framework reflects a broader shift towards balancing flexibility with accountability in distance learning. As online education continues in response to regional developments, Abu Dhabi schools are prioritising structured systems that support both academic performance and student welfare.
