The Story Behind the UAE Flag: A Teen’s Historic Contribution

Flags are symbols of national pride, representing the identity, culture, and unity of a country. For Emirati diplomat Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, the UAE flag holds an even deeper significance—he designed it as a teenager, leaving a lasting mark on the nation's history.

A Young Designer’s Triumph

In 1971, at the age of 19, Al Maainah came across an advertisement in Al Ittihad newspaper for a flag design competition. Driven by patriotism and creativity, he submitted his design alongside 1,000 other contestants. His design was ultimately chosen, though he did not immediately recognize it when it was first published in black and white.

It was only on December 2, 1971, during the official flag-raising ceremony at Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, that he realized his creation had become the national symbol of the United Arab Emirates.

A Moment of Honor

Reflecting on his achievement, Al Maainah expressed immense pride, particularly in knowing that the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, personally selected and hoisted the flag on that historic day.

“I had the honour of meeting the late Sheikh Zayed many times. I always stood before him with pride and gratitude because he was the one who chose my design. It is the greatest honour to know that he hoisted that flag with his own hands on December 2, 1971.”

The Meaning Behind the Colors

The UAE flag consists of four colors—red, green, white, and black—each carrying symbolic significance.

  • Black represents oil, a resource that transformed the country into a global economic hub.
  • Green symbolizes fertility and prosperity, reflecting the nation’s growth and development.
  • Red and White were incorporated as they were already present in the flags of various emirates.

Al Maainah emphasized that the flag’s colors can hold multiple interpretations, but these meanings were central to his original vision.

A Lasting Legacy

Designing the UAE flag has been a defining moment in Al Maainah’s life. As the nation has grown into a prosperous and culturally rich country, he remains honored to have played a role in its identity.

"Flags are the pride of a nation. It is a source of happiness for every Emirati to raise this flag and celebrate their beloved homeland."

On the eve of the 48th UAE National Day, Al Maainah extended his heartfelt congratulations to Emirati citizens and residents, celebrating the unity and progress of the UAE.

"On this joyous and prideful occasion, I’d like to offer my congratulations to our great leaders, to all Emiratis and other residents. Happy National Day!"
