Sharjah Introduces Barrier-Free Smart Parking System to Reduce Congestion

Sharjah has implemented a barrier-free smart parking system in high-traffic areas, aiming to enhance accessibility and reduce congestion. The initiative, launched by Sharjah City Municipality, features AI-powered parking solutions in popular locations, including tourist hotspots like the Hanging Gardens in Kalba.

How the Smart Parking System Works

The smart parking system, introduced in January 2025, eliminates the need for barriers and manual ticketing. AI-driven cameras automatically scan vehicle number plates upon entry and exit, tracking the parking duration and calculating fees. Users receive notifications about charges and can make payments through the ‘Mawqef’ app, available on Apple and Android devices.

Convenient Features for Users

  • The Mawqef app enables users to check parking availability, purchase seasonal permits, and pay fines.

  • A 72-hour grace period is provided before issuing parking fines.

  • Long-term parking subscriptions, ranging from daily to yearly passes, are available for frequent users.

Locations and Pricing

The smart parking lots are strategically placed in busy areas, with the following hourly rates:

  • Al Nad Smart Parking Lot – Dh8 per hour

  • Al Khan Smart Parking Lot – Dh10 per hour

  • Hanging Gardens, Kalba – Dh10 per hour

  • Al Majaz 3 Smart Parking Lot – Dh8 per hour

  • Al Majaz Smart Parking Lot – Dh5 per hour

These parking lots operate 24/7, with a 10-minute grace period for drivers.

Seasonal Subscriptions for Regular Users

For those needing frequent parking, seasonal subscriptions can be purchased via the Mawqef app or the Sharjah City Municipality website. A one-month subscription starts at Dh166 and is linked to the vehicle’s license plate.

The initiative underscores Sharjah’s commitment to smart infrastructure, offering an efficient and seamless parking experience for residents and visitors.
