Over 409,000 Motorists Fined for Slow Driving in UAE, 99% of Violations in Abu Dhabi
The UAE Ministry of Interior has revealed that more than 409,000 motorists were fined in 2024 for slow driving violations, particularly on fast-moving highways. The violations primarily involved driving below the minimum speed limit and failing to yield to faster vehicles, especially in overtaking lanes.
Of the 409,305 fines issued, an overwhelming 99% occurred in Abu Dhabi (409,059), highlighting the emirate’s strict enforcement of traffic regulations. The remaining violations were spread across Dubai (192), Sharjah (41), Ras Al Khaimah (6), Umm Al Quwain (4), and Ajman (3), with no fines reported in Fujairah.
Disrupting Traffic and Increasing Risk
Traffic officials warned that slow driving in designated fast lanes not only disrupts the flow of traffic but also increases the risk of accidents by forcing faster drivers to make unsafe overtaking maneuvers. “It creates confusion for faster drivers and forces them to take risks,” said frequent highway driver Ali Al Naqbi.
Abdul Rahman Al Hamadi echoed these concerns, calling for clearer public awareness and stricter enforcement, particularly to prevent dangerous lane changes prompted by slow-moving vehicles in fast lanes.
Federal Law and Updated Traffic Regulations
According to federal traffic law, driving below the minimum speed limit carries a fine of Dh400. The regulation encourages slower vehicles to remain in the right-hand lanes, leaving the leftmost lanes for overtaking. Recent updates to traffic rules, enforced from March 29, are part of broader efforts to improve road safety, with further executive regulations expected within six months to provide detailed lane-specific speed guidelines.
Awareness and Enforcement
Abu Dhabi Police have intensified their awareness campaigns, using digital platforms to remind drivers to:
-
Keep right when driving slowly
-
Give way to faster vehicles
-
Avoid using the far-left lane unless overtaking
Police also warned against tailgating or aggressive driving in response to slow drivers, urging all motorists to maintain safe distances and behave responsibly on the roads.
Authorities emphasized that the overall goal of the initiative is to enhance traffic flow and reduce preventable accidents caused by improper use of high-speed lanes.
