Motorists Spot New Darb Toll Gate Installations in Abu Dhabi, Expansion Speculated
Motorists travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi have reported spotting newly installed toll gate structures along the E11 highway, raising speculation about a possible expansion of the emirate’s smart toll network.
The installations appear to be part of the Darb toll system, with two structures identified near Ghantoot—just after the Abu Dhabi–Dubai border—and another set in the Al Qurm area. The toll gates have been installed in both directions, covering traffic heading towards and away from Abu Dhabi.
Unlike the current Darb toll points, which are located on bridges leading into Abu Dhabi Island, the newly spotted structures are positioned directly on the highway. This has led to speculation that authorities may be planning to extend toll coverage beyond traditional entry points.
The existing Darb system, launched in 2021, currently operates across four key bridges: Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Al Maqtaa Bridge, and Mussafah Bridge. It uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to detect vehicles and apply toll charges.
Authorities at QMobility have not confirmed whether the new toll gates will become operational or provided details on potential expansion plans. They stated that any official updates would be communicated through formal channels.
As of now, the newly installed toll gates are not active, and there is no clarity on whether they will apply to all vehicles or specific categories such as heavy transport.
Currently, toll charges under the Darb system apply during peak hours on weekdays from Monday to Saturday, with motorists paying Dh4 per crossing between 7am–9am and 3pm–7pm. Outside these hours, as well as on Sundays and public holidays, toll crossings remain free.
The system requires vehicle registration with a Dh100 fee, of which Dh50 is credited to the user’s account. Penalties apply for unregistered vehicles and insufficient balance, while exemptions are granted to people of determination, senior citizens, and retirees.
While no official confirmation has been issued, the presence of these new installations suggests that Abu Dhabi may be preparing to further enhance traffic management and mobility across its key highways.
