As the UAE prepares for the upcoming August public holiday, travellers are increasingly opting for cooler, nature-filled destinations, with Salalah continuing to dominate travel plans while mountain retreats and offbeat international escapes gain popularity.

The next UAE public holiday is expected to fall on Tuesday, August 25, marking the observance of Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH). The occasion is likely to create a long weekend, prompting many residents to plan short holidays focused on relaxation, pleasant weather and unique experiences.

According to travel experts, today's travellers are seeking more than just a change of scenery. They are looking for destinations that offer a refreshing change in climate and atmosphere, providing a much-needed mid-year break.

Salalah Remains the Top Choice

Travel consultants say Salalah, in southern Oman, continues to be the preferred destination for UAE residents during the Khareef season, when the region transforms into a lush green landscape with mist, light rain and waterfalls while temperatures remain in the low 20s°C.

The destination remains attractive due to its close proximity to the UAE, with direct flights taking less than two hours, making it ideal for a short three-day getaway.

Mountain Retreats and International Escapes Gain Popularity

While Salalah remains the leading choice, travellers are increasingly exploring alternative destinations that offer cooler temperatures and distinctive experiences.

Popular recommendations include Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams in Oman, known for their pleasant mountain climate, scenic hiking trails, terraced farms and panoramic viewpoints.

International destinations gaining attention include Bhutan, Kathmandu in Nepal, Sri Lanka's Ella and Nuwara Eliya, as well as lesser-known destinations such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Pondicherry in India, offering travellers a mix of natural beauty, cultural experiences and slower-paced holidays.

Travel experts also highlighted Bandar Al Khairan, near Muscat, as an emerging destination for snorkelling, dolphin watching and dhow cruises along its picturesque coves and inlets.

Industry experts recommend choosing destinations that maximise holiday time rather than spending long hours in transit.

For a three-day break, nearby destinations such as Oman are considered ideal, while travellers opting for international flights are advised to select destinations with direct or convenient connections and avoid trying to cover multiple locations in a single trip.

Early morning departures and stays of at least three nights can help travellers make the most of their holiday while enjoying a more relaxed itinerary.

With Salalah attracting thousands of visitors during the Khareef season, travel professionals advise booking flights and accommodation well in advance, as hotels tend to fill quickly and prices increase during peak travel periods.
