Dubai Residents and Businesses Adapt to New Parking Fees Amid Variable Tariff Implementation

Dubai is set to introduce a new variable parking tariff next month, prompting residents and businesses to reconsider their daily routines, office locations, and financial plans. The changes, enforced by Parkin PJSC, will impact parking costs across the city, particularly in premium zones during peak hours.

Understanding the New Parking Tariff

Starting next month, the new system will charge Dh6 per hour for premium parking spaces between 8 AM - 10 AM and 4 PM - 8 PM on weekdays. This adjustment does not apply to weekends or public holidays but will significantly affect daily commuters, office workers, and business owners.

Residents Adjusting to Increased Costs

The new parking fees have led some residents to modify their work schedules to minimize expenses. For instance, Abu Hail resident Janet R. shared that her household parking costs could rise from Dh12 to Dh20 per day, translating to an additional Dh500 per month.

With only one designated parking space in their building, Janet and her husband rely on street parking in the D zone. To manage the higher costs, they plan to adjust their schedules, with her husband opting for more office-based workdays to take advantage of free office parking.

Businesses Consider Relocating

The increase in parking fees is also pushing some business owners to reevaluate office locations.

Uma Bhattathiripad, an entrepreneur with an office on Sheikh Zayed Road for over a decade, is now considering relocating. She noted that her employees already pay for nine to ten hours of parking daily, and the new fees would add over Dh2,000 in monthly expenses for the entire team.

She also emphasized the reduction in mass parking facilities in Dubai’s central business areas, urging the RTA to introduce more long-term parking options, similar to those available in Deira and Bur Dubai.

Impact on Events and Exhibitions

Apart from daily parking costs, Dubai recently introduced a congestion pricing policy for event areas, charging Dh25 per hour for public parking near major event zones. This was first implemented around the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) during Gulfood and will apply to other major exhibitions.

This change has raised concerns for event organizers, particularly for Tanya Mokle, Project Director of the Global Education and Training Exhibition (GETEX). With her event coinciding with the Arabian Travel Market in April, she fears the increased fees may discourage attendees, particularly parents and educators exploring university options for students.

She stressed the importance of timing for her event, as universities rely on student recruitment targets for September intakes. Adjusting the exhibition date is not a feasible option, making the parking fee a significant challenge for both organizers and visitors.

Looking Ahead

As the variable parking tariff takes effect, Dubai residents, businesses, and event organizers are bracing for its impact. While some individuals adjust their work schedules, others consider relocating offices, and event organizers reevaluate visitor turnout. Many are hopeful that authorities will introduce additional long-term parking solutions to accommodate the city’s evolving infrastructure needs.
