Dubai Police Warn Drivers Against Slow Driving in Fast Lane, Citing Safety Risks
The Dubai Police have issued a renewed warning to motorists about the dangers of driving too slowly in the fast lane, a behavior that not only disrupts traffic flow but also poses serious safety risks.
As part of their ongoing road safety campaign, authorities reminded the public that vehicles lingering in the overtaking lane below the minimum speed limit can face penalties of Dh400 and four black points. The campaign also emphasized the importance of giving way to emergency and overtaking vehicles, using indicators when changing lanes, and maintaining a safe following distance.
According to the police, driving below the minimum speed limit in the fast lane contributes to accidents by forcing other drivers to brake suddenly or swerve unexpectedly. “Slow driving in fast lanes creates confusion, increases frustration, and raises the risk of collisions,” the authority said in a recent statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Motorists Share Frustrations
Many regular commuters have voiced their concerns. Ahmed Mustafa, who frequently drives between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, explained how slow vehicles in fast lanes often cause road rage. “When someone blocks the fast lane and refuses to move over, it’s incredibly frustrating—especially with cruise control set to the speed limit,” he said.
Salma M, another driver, stressed the need for lane discipline. “If you’re driving slowly, you should stick to the far-right lane. You never know why someone might be in a hurry—perhaps it's an emergency—so it's safer to let them pass.”
Statistics Show Widespread Issue
In 2023, over 300,000 drivers were fined for driving below the minimum speed limit on UAE roads, according to data from the Ministry of Interior. Authorities link such behavior to numerous traffic incidents.
Federal traffic law clearly states that slower-moving vehicles must keep to the right-hand lanes, reserving the left-most lanes for faster and overtaking traffic. Failure to comply not only disrupts traffic but violates the law.
Expert View on Lane Discipline
Driving instructor Abdullah Mahor highlighted the purpose of fast lanes: “They’re meant for overtaking and maintaining higher speeds. Slower vehicles should avoid these lanes to prevent sudden braking and lane changes by others, which can lead to accidents.”
He also emphasized the importance of driver awareness and respecting lane rules. “Proper lane discipline reduces road rage and keeps traffic flowing smoothly.”
A Continued Push for Safer Roads
Dubai Police’s campaign comes amid a broader effort to improve road safety across the emirate. The authorities are encouraging all motorists to be vigilant, understand lane purposes, and adhere to minimum and maximum speed limits to ensure safer, more efficient roads.
