Dubai Launches Major Road Upgrade to Cut Travel Time from 20 to 6 Minutes
In a significant move to improve traffic efficiency and urban connectivity, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a large-scale infrastructure project to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street, stretching from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road.
The initiative is part of a comprehensive urban development master plan that also encompasses enhancements to Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street. Designed to accommodate Dubai’s growing population and urban expansion, the project aims to improve travel times, increase road capacity, and enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
Once completed, the 20-kilometre corridor between Jumeirah and Al Qudra Road will offer streamlined traffic movement and improved accessibility. This development complements the ongoing road improvement works between Al Khail Road and Emirates Road.
The upgraded infrastructure will support multiple modes of transportation, including new pedestrian walkways, a dedicated cycling track, landscaped boulevards, and improved public spaces. A new link will also connect the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to adjacent residential neighborhoods, supporting last-mile connectivity.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project will benefit key residential and commercial areas such as Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha, and Al Quoz. These areas collectively accommodate more than two million residents.
Upon completion, the upgraded street is expected to support 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The most notable benefit will be a drastic reduction in travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road—from 20 minutes down to just six minutes.
Redevelopment of Key Intersections
The project involves the redevelopment of six major intersections:
-
Jumeirah Street: Two-lane tunnel in each direction with a signalised intersection
-
Al Wasl Street: Two-lane tunnel facilitating traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street
-
Sheikh Zayed Road: Two bridges to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion
-
First Al Khail Street: A tunnel enabling direct access from Al Barsha to Sheikh Zayed Road
-
First Al Khail to Al Asayel: Road expanded to four lanes in each direction
-
Al Khail Road: Two new flyovers catering to traffic moving to and from Al Quoz and Deira
Overall, the project includes the construction of four bridges and three tunnels, totaling 4,100 metres in length.
Progress on Al Khail to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Section
Construction work is also advancing on a 4.6-kilometre segment between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This section includes an 800-metre tunnel near Kings’ School in Al Barsha South. As of now, more than 70% of this phase has been completed, with the opening scheduled for the third quarter of 2025.
The new infrastructure aligns with Dubai’s vision for a more efficient, interconnected, and sustainable city, enhancing both vehicular and non-motorised travel across its urban landscape.
