Abu Dhabi Imposes Fines on Abandoned and Dirty Vehicles in Public Spaces

The Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi has announced new regulations imposing hefty fines on vehicle owners who leave their cars abandoned or dirty in public spaces, distorting the city's general appearance. The penalties are part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and order in the emirate.

Under the new regulations, three types of penalties will be enforced depending on the recurrence of the violation:

  • A first violation will result in a Dh500 fine.

  • A second violation will lead to a Dh1,000 fine.

  • A third-time violation will result in a Dh2,000 fine.

Additionally, Law No. 2 of 2012 stipulates penalties for abandoning a vehicle’s body or frame in public spaces, as this also contributes to a distorted public image. The fines for such violations are structured as follows:

  • First-time violation: Dh1,000 fine.

  • Second violation: Dh2,000 fine.

  • Third violation: Dh4,000 fine.

Efforts to Maintain Cleanliness

Authorities have conducted campaigns in the past to raise awareness about the issue and warn motorists against leaving their vehicles unkempt. With the likelihood of more cars being left dirty in public areas during the summer months, residents are urged to keep their vehicles clean, especially when traveling for vacations.

A Khaleej Times report from 2023 noted that several residents returned from holidays to find warning notices on their vehicles, highlighting the importance of regular maintenance and cleanliness.

Regulations in Other Emirates

Other emirates have implemented similar measures. In Dubai, residents are fined Dh500 if they leave their cars unwashed for extended periods in public parking spaces. Inspectors are tasked with identifying abandoned vehicles, placing warning notices, and giving owners 15 days to clean their cars before impoundment.

In Sharjah, the municipality impounded 3,911 abandoned cars in the first six months of 2021 alone, reflecting the authorities’ strict enforcement of cleanliness regulations.

These measures aim to enhance the visual appeal of urban areas and ensure that public spaces remain clean and well-maintained across the UAE.
