The Digital Cooperation Organization and League of Arab States Sign MoU to Drive Digital Transformation and Economic Growth

The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) and the League of Arab States (LAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the growth of an inclusive and sustainable digital economy across the Arab region. The agreement, signed by H.E. Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the DCO, and H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the LAS, took place on September 23, 2024, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The MoU is aimed at fostering digital transformation and economic development in the Arab world. The collaboration between the DCO and LAS will focus on developing digital market opportunities, aligning policies and legislation on the digital economy, and supporting innovation, research, and development. Both organizations will also work together to promote ethical AI, strengthen digital governance, and enhance digital skills and infrastructure.

H.E. Deemah AlYahya emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "Our mission is to create a more inclusive, cross-border digital economy. The LAS plays a critical role in unifying the region's vision for a digital future, and this MoU is a key step toward achieving sustainable development across DCO Member States. We are excited to work together to empower entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises."

H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit highlighted the need for the Arab region to keep pace with global technological advancements, noting, "Investing in digital infrastructure and innovation is essential for our region's future. Our collaboration with the DCO will help us craft policies that support responsible AI use and foster digital growth, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction, enhanced security, and sustainable development."

The agreement builds on the discussions between the DCO and LAS in Cairo in May 2024, where both parties committed to strengthening their cooperation in advancing the region's digital transformation.
