Ryan Malhan Tops BWF World Junior Rankings in Landmark Moment for UAE Badminton
UAE shuttler Ryan Malhan has reached the top of the latest world junior rankings issued by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), marking a historic first for UAE badminton. The milestone follows his title-winning performance at the Hungarian International Youth Championship.
The ranking rise caps a strong run of international results for Malhan. He claimed a bronze medal at the Asian Youth Games in 2025 and previously finished on the podium at the Asian U15 Championships in 2024, establishing himself among Asia’s leading players in his age category.
National development pathway credited
Officials attributed Malhan’s progress to the UAE’s structured athlete development ecosystem led by the UAE Committee For Talent And Sports Support. A key pillar is the National Athlete Pathway program, a framework designed to identify and develop sporting talent using international best practices.
Elite Sport UAE (ESUAE) has also supported his journey through a high-performance training environment at its Badminton Centre of Excellence, offering specialist coaching, technical analysis, and tailored strength and conditioning programs.
Technical boost from world-class expertise
As part of its talent development efforts, the Committee recently hosted a technical session featuring Danish star Anders Antonsen, currently ranked world No. 3 by the BWF. Antonsen — a European Games champion and multiple-time European champion and world championship medalist — met officials and emerging players during the UAE Sports Talent Badminton Championship to share technical insights and performance guidance.
Strong institutional backing
Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Undersecretary for the Sports Development and Competitiveness Sector at the Ministry of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Committee For Talent And Sports Support, said the achievement reflects the country’s long-term strategy of investing in athletic talent and building unified institutional support systems.
He noted that collaboration with globally accomplished athletes is part of a broader plan to accelerate technical development, widen international exposure, and improve medal prospects for Emirati athletes.
Noura Al Jasmi, President of the UAE Badminton Federation, described Malhan’s rise as a sign of the sport’s rapid growth in the country and called him a role model for aspiring Emirati players. She added that a sponsorship agreement signed last year with the Committee provides him with financial, technical, administrative, and logistical support for international competition.
