Grandweld Shipyards Pioneers Solar Energy Use in Middle East Shipbuilding
Grandweld Shipyards has become the first shipbuilding company in the Middle East to integrate solar energy on a large scale, achieving a significant milestone in sustainable energy adoption. With the completion of Phase One of its solar panel project, the company now meets 50% of its energy requirements through renewable sources, positioning itself as a leader in sustainability within the maritime and offshore industries.
The project aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050, as well as the vision of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) for clean energy. The solar project currently produces 569 kWp, powering half of the energy needs for Grandweld’s office building and ship construction processes.
Commitment to 100% Renewable Energy
Grandweld aims to achieve a fully green shipyard by the end of 2025 by meeting 100% of its energy requirements through renewable energy sources. With Phase Two underway, the company is set to increase its solar energy capacity to 1.3 megawatts, surpassing internal needs and contributing surplus energy to the UAE’s renewable energy objectives.
Jamal Abki, General Manager of Grandweld Shipyards, expressed the company’s dedication to sustainability:
"Sustainability is at the core of our operations. This solar energy initiative underscores our commitment to innovation and environmental preservation, in alignment with the UAE’s vision for clean energy. As the first shipbuilder in the region to adopt renewable energy at this scale, we are leading the shift toward a greener maritime industry and encouraging others to follow suit."
Beyond Solar Energy
Grandweld’s sustainability efforts extend beyond solar power. The company’s shipyard features advanced energy-efficient systems, such as light-sensitive technologies, and adheres to eco-friendly construction practices. Grandweld was recognized for its sustainable practices with the Leed Gold Membership from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2012.
Shaping the Future of Maritime Sustainability
Grandweld Shipyards’ solar energy initiative sets a benchmark for the shipbuilding industry and aligns with the UAE's broader goals of environmental preservation and renewable energy adoption. The completion of Phase Two will not only enhance the company’s sustainability credentials but also support the UAE’s mission to build a cleaner, greener future.
By leading this transformative initiative, Grandweld Shipyards is reshaping the maritime industry and reinforcing its commitment to global sustainability efforts.
