Four UAE Universities Climb Global Rankings as Research Performance Strengthens

The UAE’s higher education sector has strengthened its international standing, with four universities improving their positions in the 2026 Global 2000 rankings released by the Center for World University Rankings.

The rankings highlight significant gains driven primarily by enhanced research performance, reflecting the UAE’s continued investment in education, innovation, and scientific development.

According to the latest rankings, Khalifa University emerged as the highest-ranked university in the UAE, followed by United Arab Emirates University, University of Sharjah, and New York University Abu Dhabi.

Significant Improvement in Global Rankings

All four institutions recorded improvements compared to their positions in the previous year.

Khalifa University climbed 51 places to rank 795th globally, placing it among the top 3.8 per cent of universities worldwide. United Arab Emirates University rose 64 places to 958th, while the University of Sharjah advanced 98 positions to 994th. NYU Abu Dhabi also improved its standing, reaching 1,063rd place globally.

The CWUR rankings assessed 21,291 universities across 95 countries using 81 million outcome-based data points. Institutions were evaluated across four key areas: education, employability, faculty quality, and research performance, with research carrying the highest weighting at 40 per cent.

Research Investment Driving Growth

Commenting on the results, Dr Nadim Mahassen said the UAE’s performance reflects long-term national priorities focused on education and innovation.

“The extraordinary rise of UAE universities reflects years of financial backing, and the recognition of science and education as valuable public goods,” Mahassen said.

“UAE universities are succeeding in delivering high-quality education, attracting and retaining talent, and producing strong research at scale. This is not just an academic success but a national one, because the strengthening of the UAE’s higher education system is central to scientific development, innovation, and the country’s long-term future.”

Strong Position in Arab Rankings

The UAE also maintained a competitive position within the Arab region rankings.

Khalifa University ranked 10th among Arab universities, making it the highest-ranked institution in the UAE. UAE University followed in 12th place, while the University of Sharjah ranked 13th and NYU Abu Dhabi secured 18th position.

The results reinforce the UAE’s status as one of the leading higher education systems in the Arab world, although institutions in Saudi Arabia continue to dominate the regional top tier, led by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.

Global Academic Competition Intensifies

At the global level, Harvard University retained the number one position for the 15th consecutive year, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

The top five were completed by University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

CWUR noted that while the United States continues to dominate the upper ranks, competition is increasing from Asia, particularly from China, where sustained investment in research infrastructure and higher education continues to drive rapid progress.

China now leads the Global 2000 rankings in representation, with 360 universities included, surpassing all other countries.

Dr Mahassen said the evolving rankings reflect a broader shift in global academic influence.

“Many years of substantial funding, and the ability to attract talent from around the world, have allowed the leading American universities to set international academic standards and drive innovation across disciplines,” he said. “However, other regions are increasingly closing the gap, creating a more competitive and multipolar higher education landscape.”

The latest rankings underscore the UAE’s growing role as a regional hub for research, innovation, and higher education excellence, supported by continued investments in science, technology, and academic development.
