Five industries undergoing transformative change due to ongoing artificial intelligence research

This report provides an in-depth analysis of the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) across five major global industries: healthcare, aviation, agriculture, education, and energy. Key developments, partnerships, and advancements are discussed to highlight how AI is driving efficiency, innovation, and sustainability in these sectors.

1) Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is poised to significantly impact the healthcare sector by streamlining administrative tasks, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and personalizing patient care. Machine learning tools are particularly effective, capable of analyzing large datasets, including patient records and medical imaging, to identify patterns and predict diseases for earlier and more effective treatment.

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is at the forefront of this transformation, with over 20 health-related research projects. Key partnerships include Malaria No More, Quris-AI, Aspire, Infinite Brain Technologies, Abu Dhabi Health Co, and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City. In 2023, MBZUAI launched the Institute of Digital Public Health (IDPH) to advance AI in healthcare, aligning with the UAE's vision to become a global AI and life sciences hub. Additionally, MBZUAI, in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and Core42, inaugurated the Global AI Healthcare Academy to enhance AI skills in the healthcare workforce.

2) Aviation

In aviation, AI is optimizing operations, improving safety, and enhancing passenger experiences. Airlines utilize AI to predict maintenance needs, optimize aircraft usage, and reduce delays. In a strategic partnership, MBZUAI and Etihad Airways signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore AI-driven improvements in aviation. This includes joint training programs and research initiatives, with Etihad Airways also collaborating on Jais, the world's most advanced Arabic large language model (LLM).

3) Agriculture

AI technologies are revolutionizing agriculture by increasing crop yields, enhancing food security, and optimizing resource usage. AI-powered drones and sensors monitor crops for early detection of diseases and nutrient deficiencies, while machine learning algorithms analyze weather and soil data for precision farming.

MBZUAI's collaboration with Silal, an Abu Dhabi-based agri-food company, aims to integrate AI innovation in agriculture and food production. This partnership supports the creation of an AI Center of Excellence, promoting sustainable practices and boosting the UAE’s food production capabilities.

4) Education

AI is transforming education through personalized learning experiences, automated administrative tasks, and innovative learning environments. Adaptive learning platforms use AI to customize curricula to individual student needs, while virtual tutors and chatbots provide instant feedback.

MBZUAI’s Metaverse Center (MMC) is pioneering research on AI-enabled metaverse solutions for virtual education. This includes developing immersive 3D environments for remote learning, creating bespoke avatars, and generating 3D content to expand educational access.

5) Energy

AI's role in the energy sector includes optimizing operations, enhancing efficiency, and promoting sustainability. MBZUAI is developing the AI Operating System (AIOS) to reduce the energy consumption, time, and cost associated with AI computing. AIOS improves efficiency by making models smaller and faster, reducing reliance on expensive hardware.

In smart grids, AI algorithms optimize real-time energy distribution, minimizing wastage. MBZUAI researchers are applying federated learning to train AI models that improve energy grid efficiency while maintaining data privacy. This approach enhances the reliability of energy distribution and supports sustainable energy practices.
