Dubai’s RTA Opens Two New Bridges to Ease Traffic on Al Asayel and Oud Maitha Streets
Dubai has opened two new bridges aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity across key parts of the city, authorities announced on Friday.
The infrastructure upgrades were unveiled by the Roads and Transport Authority as part of the broader Oud Maitha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project, a major component of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development.
Officials say the new bridges will enhance traffic flow between residential and commercial districts while supporting Dubai’s long-term urban mobility plans.
Two bridges to improve traffic flow
The first bridge is located at the intersection of Oud Maitha Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Wasl Club Street.
The structure features two lanes and is designed to accommodate approximately 2,400 vehicles per hour. It directs traffic from Al Asayel Street toward Al Wasl Club Street, helping ease congestion at a junction that previously experienced heavy traffic delays.
The second bridge is located at the intersection of Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road. With two lanes and a capacity of around 3,000 vehicles per hour, it channels traffic from Al Asayel Street onto Al Khail Road toward Business Bay Crossing.
Project progress and timeline
According to the RTA, around 72 per cent of the overall project has now been completed, while tunnel construction has reached 70 per cent progress.
The upcoming tunnel will eventually serve vehicles travelling from Dubai–Al Ain Road toward the Oud Maitha service road.
Authorities expect the remaining bridges and road expansion works to be completed by the third quarter of 2026.
Once finished, the project will include approximately 4.3 kilometres of bridges and tunnels and 14 kilometres of upgraded roads, along with improvements to four major intersections along the corridor.
Faster journeys for commuters
The project is expected to significantly increase road capacity in the area.
Traffic capacity on Oud Maitha Street will rise from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions, representing a 50 per cent increase.
More importantly for commuters, travel time along the corridor is expected to drop dramatically—from around 20 minutes to just five minutes, a reduction of approximately 75 per cent.
Communities and landmarks to benefit
The development will improve connectivity for several key communities, including Za'abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha, and Umm Hurair.
Major landmarks such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club are also expected to benefit from improved accessibility.
Urban planners estimate that the surrounding area could be home to more than 420,000 residents by 2030, making the infrastructure upgrade a key investment in the city’s future growth.
Four intersections being upgraded
Beyond the two newly opened bridges, the project includes upgrades to four major intersections along the corridor.
Improvements include additional lanes, new slip roads, expanded bridges, and a single-lane tunnel designed to improve traffic flow between major highways.
Officials say the upgrades form part of Dubai’s broader strategy to expand road infrastructure ahead of demand as the city continues to grow rapidly.
