DIPW Concludes First Phase of 'Illustrations for Children's Stories' Workshop
The Dubai International Program for Writing (DIPW), an initiative by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF), has successfully wrapped up the first phase of its 'Illustrations for Children's Stories' workshop. This initiative aims to nurture young illustrators and enhance the literary ecosystem.
The in-person workshop was held at the Mohammed bin Rashid Library (MBRL) and will continue virtually in its second phase until the ten participants complete their projects.
His Excellency Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of the MBRF, commented: "The success of the workshop is a testament to the MBRF’s commitment to developing young talents and encouraging them to unleash their creative potential. It also highlights our dedication to enhancing their skills in illustrating children’s stories using innovative and creative methods. Our primary goal is to create engaging and child-friendly artworks that inspire a love for books and foster a reading culture among young people."
H.E. added, "The next phases of the workshop will focus on providing participants with additional training to develop more advanced skills and techniques, enabling them to achieve their creative goals."
The DIPW initiative underscores its commitment to enhancing literature and nurturing emerging artists. The primary objective is to equip young talents with the skills and resources necessary to pursue their literary and creative endeavors, thereby contributing to the creation, dissemination, and development of knowledge.
The first phase of the workshop, which began on May 20, 2024, and lasted over two months, was led by writer and illustrator Fatima Al-Amiri. The workshop included hands-on training on innovative techniques, creative tools, and visual effects for illustrating children’s stories. Participants learned the fundamentals of character development, scene illustration, and the principles of writing children’s novels.
During this phase, participants gained insights into the essential elements and aesthetic aspects of children’s stories, such as selecting appropriate colors, arranging page elements, and effectively using blank spaces. They were also introduced to a diverse range of Arabic and international story models, learning various global methods for designing and producing engaging children’s books.
The workshop included practical sessions on book cover design, educating participants on common mistakes and the artistic processes involved in book production. Equipped with these skills and knowledge, participants are prepared to create illustrations for stories written by peers in other DIPW storytelling workshops. These illustrations will receive further feedback and guidance before publication in the next phase.
DIPW's innovative knowledge initiatives have achieved significant milestones across the Arab world, including in Kuwait, Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt. The program has established itself as a leading intellectual platform, promoting a renaissance in Arab children’s literature by fostering young creative talents and supporting their development.
