Digital Cooperation Organization Hosts Strategic Roundtable with Tech Giants to Combat Online Misinformation
The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), a global multilateral body dedicated to fostering digital prosperity, held its first strategic roundtable in Riyadh, bringing together leading social media and technology companies to address the pervasive issue of online misinformation. This event is part of the DCO's continued efforts to combat misinformation through its "Digital Space Accelerators" initiative, following a series of global roundtables in 2023.
Key stakeholders from prominent digital platforms, including Google, LinkedIn, Meta, and TikTok, participated in the discussion, which aimed to identify challenges, propose solutions, and promote collaboration to safeguard the digital economy from the adverse effects of misinformation.
Held at the DCO headquarters, the roundtable emphasized the importance of creating a trustworthy digital information ecosystem. Representatives from the participating companies shared insights and strategies to combat misinformation, stressing the need for a united, multistakeholder approach to tackle this critical issue.
Alaa Abdulaal, Chief of the Digital Economy Foresight department at the DCO, highlighted the significance of the dialogue, stating, "The exchange of ideas and insights from leading platforms has been invaluable. Cooperation through a multistakeholder approach is crucial in combating online misinformation, aligning with the DCO's mission. We are confident that the outcomes of this roundtable will pave the way for a more informed and resilient digital society."
Leaders from the participating companies echoed this sentiment. Sarah Al-Husseini, Head of Government Affairs & Public Policy, KSA at Google, emphasized Google's commitment to combating misinformation, stating, "We work hard to retain trust by ensuring users have access to high-quality information and the tools to know what they can trust. Collaboration with industry experts is key to creating a safer internet for everyone."
Similarly, Ranim Alamin, Strategic Government Partnerships Head, KSA at LinkedIn, underscored the importance of a united approach, noting, "We are committed to building a more trusted and resilient digital information ecosystem through collaboration."
Tom Bonsundy-O'Bryan, Misinformation Policy, EMEA Lead at Meta, reiterated Meta's commitment to tackling misinformation while balancing values of expression, safety, authenticity, and privacy. Hatem Samman, Executive Director of Government Relations & Public Policy, KSA at TikTok, added, "By working together, we can create a safe, authentic space where the community can thrive."
This roundtable marks a significant step in the DCO's mission to combat online misinformation and promote digital trust, with plans for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a secure and trustworthy digital environment.
