Abu Dhabi Hosts Groundbreaking Open-Source AI Summit

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a global leader in applied scientific research, has inaugurated the Open-Source AI Summit in Abu Dhabi. Held at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island, the two-day event has gathered over 300 international AI experts from renowned organizations such as Meta and Google DeepMind to discuss the future of artificial intelligence.

Key topics at the summit include ethical considerations in AI ownership, sustainable AI computing innovations, and the growing debate between open- and closed-source AI models. The event comes amid increasing global focus on AI’s societal and technological impact.

Highlights from the Summit

H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council and Adviser to the UAE President, underscored the importance of open-source AI, stating: “You can leverage a closed-source AI model controlled by a company, or an open-source model that fosters community-driven innovation. If AI is to integrate into the fabric of society, countries, companies, and individuals must decide who controls it. Opening Falcon AI models was TII’s contribution to the world.”

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, described the summit as a defining moment in global AI discourse. “Falcon and other open-source models unite scientists, developers, and innovators to accelerate technological advancements. We look forward to continuing this journey with the Falcon Foundation,” she said.

Esteemed Speakers and Key Discussions

The summit features prominent speakers such as:

  • Dr. Belgacem Haba (Adeia Corporation, USA): Challenges posed by AI in semiconductor manufacturing.

  • Prof. Philip Torr (Oxford University, UK): The ownership of AI and the long-term benefits of open-source models despite potential risks.

  • Dr. Natalia Vassilieva (Cerebras Systems, USA): Sustainable AI computing and compact language models.

  • Dr. Armand Joulin (Google DeepMind, France): Trustworthy algorithms and leveraging foundation models.

  • Dr. Michal Valko (Meta Paris, France): Innovations in AI openness.

TII’s Dr. Jingwei Zuo will present Falcon Mamba, the first State Space Language Model, launched earlier this year with groundbreaking architecture.

Falcon AI: A UAE Contribution to the Global AI Landscape

The Falcon AI series, developed by TII, has gained international acclaim, beginning with Falcon 40B, the UAE’s first open-source large language model, in 2023. Subsequent models have consistently ranked among the top open-source AI solutions globally, as validated by Hugging Face. A new Falcon model is anticipated by the end of 2024.

Dr. Hakim Hacid, Chief Researcher at TII’s AI Research Center, emphasized the importance of open-source AI, stating, “While the challenges of policy, compute power, and hardware persist, open-source AI represents the way forward. This summit’s conversations are crucial for shaping the future.”

The summit will culminate with a TII-led panel discussing their vision for open-source AI, setting the stage for future innovations and global collaborations
