UAE Travellers Flock to Island Destinations Like Madagascar, Phuket for Budget-Friendly Summer Escapes

UAE residents are increasingly opting for serene island retreats this summer, with a notable surge in travel to destinations such as Madagascar, Phuket, Seychelles, Malta, and Cyprus, according to the newly released Expedia 2025 Island Hot List. The report reveals that global interest in island getaways has jumped by 30%, with travellers from the UAE leading the trend in search of affordable, nature-focused holidays.

Expedia’s latest data shows remarkable increases in accommodation searches from UAE travellers:

  • Madagascar (+265%)

  • Phuket (+210%)

  • Seychelles (+205%)

  • Malta (+170%)

  • Cyprus (+140%)

The shift is driven by a preference for restorative travel experiences, simpler visa processes, and more affordable price points compared to traditional urban destinations.

According to Subair Thekepurathvalappil, Senior Manager at Wisefox Tourism, the change in travel behaviour reflects a deeper desire for tranquility and personal well-being. “Travellers are now looking for peace, space, and natural beauty. A stay at a quiet island resort has become the new definition of luxury,” he explained. “Bookings for secluded and boutique island resorts have increased, with guests seeking to disconnect from daily life and spend meaningful time with loved ones.”

The Expedia Hot List also named the Top 10 Island Destinations for 2025, based on travel experiences:

  • Aruba – Best for year-round sunshine

  • Bali – Best for relaxation

  • Dominican Republic – Best for adventure

  • Fiji – Best for community

  • Jamaica – Best for culture

  • Koh Samui – Best for affordable luxury

  • Maldives – Best for romance

  • Oahu, Hawaii – Best for surfing

  • Paros, Greece – Best for nightlife

  • Sardinia, Italy – Best for food lovers

Travellers are also finding value in off-season travel, with September emerging as the optimal month for island vacations. According to the report, “Hotel prices in popular destinations like Paros and Sardinia can drop by as much as 35% in September compared to peak August rates.”

UAE travel agencies are witnessing this trend firsthand, noting that emotional wellness, sustainability, and authentic local experiences are at the heart of holiday planning for many residents.

From white sand beaches to peaceful coastal escapes, UAE holidaymakers are redefining summer travel — choosing slower, more mindful experiences over traditional tourist itineraries.
