UAE Public Holidays 2026: Six-Day Break, Long Weekends and Holiday Transfers Explained
UAE residents could enjoy several extended breaks and long weekends in 2026, thanks to a public holiday transfer system that allows certain holidays falling mid-week to be moved to the beginning or end of the week.
The holiday transfer mechanism, introduced under a law that came into effect in 2025, was applied for the first time during Eid Al Etihad (UAE National Day), enabling residents to benefit from a longer four-day weekend.
Originally scheduled for December 2 and 3, 2025, the National Day holidays were officially moved to December 1 and 2, giving residents following the Saturday-Sunday weekend a continuous break from November 29 to December 2.
The same system could create additional long weekends in 2026, which is expected to feature multiple public holidays, including a potential six-day break during Eid Al Adha.
New Year’s Day
The first public holiday of 2026 falls on Thursday, January 1.
If the UAE Cabinet decides to transfer the holiday to Friday, January 2, residents could enjoy a three-day weekend to start the year.
Eid Al Fitr
Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, is expected to fall between Friday, March 20, and Sunday, March 22, based on current astronomical calculations.
The holiday provides three official days off and is not subject to transfer.
Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha
One of the longest breaks of the year is expected during Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha.
Based on astronomical projections, the holidays are likely to run from Tuesday, May 26, to Friday, May 29. Combined with the weekend, residents could enjoy six consecutive days off.
These holidays are not transferable.
Hijri New Year
The Islamic New Year is expected to fall on Tuesday, June 16.
As a transferable holiday, it may be moved to create a longer weekend, subject to an official Cabinet decision.
Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday
The Prophet’s Birthday is expected to be observed on Tuesday, August 25.
Like the Hijri New Year holiday, it may be transferred to the beginning or end of the week if approved by the UAE Cabinet.
Eid Al Etihad (UAE National Day)
The UAE will celebrate its 55th National Day on December 2 and 3, 2026, which fall on Wednesday and Thursday.
Should the Cabinet approve a transfer, residents could potentially enjoy a four-day weekend at the end of the year.
Moon Sighting Remains Key
Authorities have emphasised that Islamic holiday dates remain subject to official moon sightings, as Hijri months can last either 29 or 30 days depending on crescent visibility. The dates mentioned are based on the latest astronomical calculations and may be adjusted following official announcements.
With multiple opportunities for extended breaks and holiday transfers, 2026 is expected to offer residents several chances to plan vacations, family gatherings and leisure activities throughout the year.
