Shaban 1447 AH Crescent Photographed in Abu Dhabi by Astronomy Centre

UAE astronomers successfully captured a clear image of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Shaban 1447 AH, according to the Astronomy Centre. The sighting was made earlier today from Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi, which operates under the International Astronomy Center.

The crescent was photographed at 11 a.m. UAE time, when the moon was positioned 6.7 degrees away from the sun. The observation was carried out by a specialised team comprising Osama Ghannam, Anas Muhammad, Khalafan Al-Naimi, and Muhammad Awda.

Successive Lunar Observations from Abu Dhabi

This latest sighting follows similar observations made on January 18, when the same observatory successfully photographed the crescent marking the end of the month of Rajab. The two consecutive lunar observations underscore the country’s ongoing efforts to support astronomical accuracy in Islamic calendar tracking.

Following these observations, the UAE Fatwa Council officially announced that Monday marks the end of Rajab 1447 AH, with Tuesday, January 20, marking the first day of Shaban. The Council’s declaration came after reviewing scientific data on the crescent moon in collaboration with the nation’s specialised astronomical authorities.

Determining the Start of Ramadan 2026

Islamic months last 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. On the 29th day of Shaban, the UAE’s official moon-sighting committees will convene to determine the start of Ramadan 2026.

Based on current astronomical projections, Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026, although the exact date will depend on the official moon sighting.

The holy month of Ramadan will conclude with Eid Al Fitr, marking the first long weekend of the year in the UAE, as residents come together to celebrate the completion of fasting and reflect on the spiritual significance of the season.
