Instagram Tightens Teen Safety Controls in UAE and Saudi Arabia with New Updates

Meta has rolled out a series of new safety-focused updates to Instagram teen accounts across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, reinforcing protections for younger users and giving parents greater control over their children’s online experience.

The latest changes build on the platform’s June 2025 introduction of teen accounts in the UAE, which automatically placed users under 16 into protected settings requiring parental approval for any relaxation of safety controls. With the new update, all users under 18 will now be automatically enrolled in enhanced safety settings, with no option to opt out without parental consent.

Default 13+ Content Rating Introduced

A key feature of the update is the introduction of a default 13+ content rating system. Inspired by age classifications used in entertainment, the setting ensures teens are exposed only to age-appropriate content. The restriction cannot be removed without parental approval, offering an added layer of reassurance for families.

Stricter Content Filtering

Instagram has strengthened its content moderation policies for teen users. In addition to existing restrictions on explicit and adult material, the platform will now further limit exposure to strong language, risky stunts, and content that may encourage harmful behaviour, including posts related to narcotics.

‘Limited Content’ Option for Parents

Recognising different parenting preferences, Instagram has introduced a new “Limited Content” setting. This feature allows parents to apply stricter controls, including additional content filtering and restrictions on comments, preventing teens from viewing, posting, or receiving comments on posts.

Restrictions on Inappropriate Accounts

The platform has enhanced its detection systems to identify accounts that share age-inappropriate content. Teens will no longer be able to follow or interact with such accounts, and these accounts will also be prevented from contacting or engaging with teen users.

Safer Search and AI Features

Instagram has also blocked search results for sensitive or mature terms, including variations and misspellings. Additionally, its AI-driven features have been updated to ensure responses remain suitable for users aged 13 and above.

The updates are being rolled out gradually across the region and are expected to be fully implemented in the coming months. The move aligns with global efforts by Meta to create safer digital environments for younger users, following similar updates introduced in markets such as the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.
