How NRIs in the UAE can update their Indian passport address

For Indian expatriates residing in the UAE, maintaining an accurate address in official documents like passports is crucial. If your Indian passport lists an outdated address, you now have the opportunity to update it; but note, this process requires a full passport reissue.

Where to Start: BLS International Services UAE
The first step involves submitting your application through BLS International Services UAE, the designated outsourcing partner for the Consulate General of India. You must schedule an appointment at your nearest BLS centre, which varies by emirate.

What Documents Are Required?
To support your updated address claim, you’ll need to present the following originals (all must be current and in English):

  1. Utility bills (electricity, telephone, water, or gas), dated within the last three months
  2. Original election commission card, eAadhaar, or Aadhaar card
  3. A nativity certificate, either attested by the state home department or verifiable online
  4. Bank passbook (active account), including the first and most recent transaction pages covering the past year

Step-by-Step application process:

  1. Fill out the passport application form specifically labeled “miscellaneous services” for updating details.
  2. Submit your current passport (both original and copies).
  3. Provide recent passport-sized photographs that meet specification standards.
  4. Ensure your UAE residence visa is valid; this is a mandatory requirement.

When requesting certain changes (such as using a spouse's or parent’s address) you must also provide supporting documents. This includes:

  1. An affidavit (NOC) from the spouse/parent if they are in the UAE, or
  2. A notarized NOC if they reside in India
  3. For minors, parental passport address details are used
  4. And importantly, personal appearance by the applicant is required.

Adding a UAE Address Instead of an Indian Address?
Since 2020, NRIs without a permanent Indian address have been eligible to feature their UAE address in their Indian passport. To do this, you must provide additional documentation, such as a registered tenancy contract or property title deed, along with other relevant documents.
