Greta Thunberg, the Nobel Peace Prize and Climate Change

In the light of the Emirati Childrens Day, with the country hosting a number of activities including workshops that talk and discuss issues regarding the environment, we are forced to address the efforts and gutsy of the little activist, Greta Thunberg, from Sweden.

Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old teenager, who on her Twitter page describes herself as a 16-year-old climate activist with Asperger [syndrome]" is in the headlines after she was nominated as a candidate to receive this years Nobel Peace Prize. Ms. Thunberg is a young representative who has set out to fight for a conspicuous cause, at which, sadly, the world leaders have turned a blind eye. Even after the horrific melting down of glaciers and the well-apparent changes in the climate that we are subject to on a daily basis, little has been taken to consideration, let alone action, worldwide to thwart the same. In this juncture, a tiny voice echoes in the ears of the elderly ones.

Ms. Thunberg was not ready to take this sitting down, she mobilized the voices of many to create thunders around the world. Earlier this year, Ms. Thunberg was cheered for her equally powerful and alarming message that rang the warning bells at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, when she told them: I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. Last August, she staged her first school strike for the climate in front of the Swedish Parliament.

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests, the overwhelming impact of which cannot be unseen by the world with it gaining exponential momentum since its start. She continued to gain International attention after she spoke at the UN Climate talks in Poland in December. The coordinated school strikes, being held from the South Pacific to the edge of the Arctic Circle, were inspired by Thunbergs solitary demonstrations outside the Swedish Parliament.

Since then, the weekly protests have been taking shape in a handful of cities to hundreds, driven by social media-savvy students and dramatic headlines about the impact of climate change. Although the protests meant students skipping school, these young protestors have been backed for their eye-opening movement by scientists around the world, with thousands of them signing petitions in support of the students.

As of yesterday, over the 24 hours of climate action, organizers of the climate strike believe, more than 1 million students walked out of their schools to protest against the governments inaction on climate change. From Australia and New Zealand, to Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and South America, students from all over the world took to the streets to demand change.

With the young ones mobilizing themselves under a young leader, it is high time that we educated ourselves of the deterioration of the climate that is pointing fingers at none else than us, and will eventually affect the coming generations. We are, in fact, threatening the lives of our own kids. At schools, universities, homes and even playgrounds, we must enlighten the new generation of the same and brainstorm ways in which this can be tackled.
