Dubai Fountain to Reopen After Renovation: A Brighter, Bolder Comeback

After a five-month hiatus, the world-renowned Dubai Fountain is set to reopen in October, promising an upgraded experience with enhanced choreography, lighting, and sound systems.

The iconic attraction, located on the 30-acre Burj Khalifa Lake beside The Dubai Mall, has been under renovation since April 19. Dubai Mall management confirmed that the project adhered to a strict deadline to ensure the fountain’s return “bigger, brighter, and bolder” for both residents and tourists.

For years, the Dubai Fountain has stood alongside the Burj Khalifa as one of the UAE’s most-visited landmarks. Drawing thousands nightly, the choreographed water, light, and music spectacle is visible from more than 20 miles away. Each 30-minute performance uses over 22,000 gallons of water propelled up to 500 feet into the air, accompanied by captivating soundtracks.

A Rich Legacy Since 2009

Officially inaugurated on May 8, 2009, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the fountain has since become the “heartbeat of Downtown Dubai.” Conceived by California-based WET, the creators of the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas, the attraction has continually elevated Dubai’s status as a global tourism and cultural hub.

The naming of the fountain in 2008 was itself a historic moment. More than 4,000 residents from 100 nationalities submitted entries during a public competition. “Dubai Fountain” was ultimately chosen for its simplicity and ability to capture the city’s spirit of inclusivity and innovation.

Expansion and Global Recognition

In July 2013, the fountain area between The Dubai Mall and Souq Al Bahar was expanded, stretching its choreography across 275 metres of Burj Khalifa Lake. Since then, it has featured prominently in New Year’s Eve celebrations, cultural events, and nightly tourism experiences, cementing its reputation as one of the world’s most spectacular attractions.

The Future of the Dubai Fountain

Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar Properties, described the renovation as part of Dubai’s ongoing commitment to innovation:

“Dubai Fountain is more than a spectacle — it is a reflection of Dubai's soul, where art, innovation, and emotion come together in perfect harmony. As we elevate this iconic landmark, we continue to create experiences that connect people, inspire wonder, and stand the test of time.”

With its reopening just days away, anticipation is running high among residents and tourists alike. Free to watch and open daily from 6 pm to 11 pm, the Dubai Fountain continues to symbolize Dubai’s vision of blending culture, entertainment, and innovation on a world stage.
