Dubai Airports, DXB pledges today to ban all single-use plastics from consumer spaces at the world’s busiest international airport starting from 1st January 2020.

Dubai Airports announced the ban on items such as bags, utensils and paper receipts. In the past 6 months, Dubai Airports has collected and disposed of more than 16 tonnes of plastic bottles and bottle caps. 

Last week to mark the World Environment Day, Costa coffee has displayed an exceptional art piece of straw globe installation by the award-winning sculpture artist, Mariska Nell. The art installation has been made from 60,000 leftover straws. The ‘Last Straw’ is a modern art piece for passengers to get inspired and commit efforts to protect the planet and eliminate practices and materials that can harm the environment. 

Eugene Barry, EVP of commercial at Dubai Airport, said: At an airport that hosts some 90 million people per year, we believe we can make a tangible difference by eliminating single-use plastics in consumer spaces.

“Today we are making a commitment to work with all of our concession and hospitality partners to achieve that goal effective January 1, 2020.”

The initiative has already prevented the distribution of 150,000 straws in a single day which is equivalent to 30,000 metres of plastic.
