Discover Dubai’s past as three tourist trails open in Deira’s historic souqs

Deira’s traditional markets have been transformed into a heritage destination with the launch of three new tourist trails, offering visitors a 1.8km cultural journey through Dubai’s rich history and vibrant commerce.

The Dh9.5 million project, led by Dubai Municipality, preserves the old-world charm of Deira while enhancing the visitor experience. Authentic materials such as sarooj (lime-based plaster) were used to maintain the original architectural character, while wooden shading structures were restored and public spaces upgraded.

Connecting Dubai’s heritage landmarks

The three trails link some of Deira’s most iconic attractions, including the Gold Souq, Al Ahmadiya School, and the Spice Souq, along with seven other traditional markets. Covering an area of 25,800 square metres, the trails integrate over 500 shops, creating a seamless path for tourists to explore markets specializing in spices, herbs, utensils, perfumes, carpets, textiles, and household goods.

Three public squares have also been developed, featuring shaded seating areas, upgraded pavements, and enhanced amenities designed to improve comfort and accessibility.

Preserving identity, embracing the future

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, highlighted the importance of the initiative:

“Deira, with its heritage and traditional markets, is an inseparable part of Dubai’s cultural and historical identity. This project honours that deep-rooted legacy while keeping pace with the present and future.”

He added that every detail was meticulously planned to ensure the project reflects the area’s history and uniqueness, enriching the experience for residents and visitors alike.

The new tourist trails not only preserve Dubai’s heritage but also provide a curated journey for visitors eager to discover the city’s past through its bustling souqs. With restored façades, upgraded walkways, and enhanced public amenities, the initiative balances tradition with modern convenience, turning Deira into a must-visit cultural hotspot.
