Western Digital Unveils Strategic Vision and AI Growth Projections at Investor Day 2025

Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) outlined its future strategy at Investor Day 2025 as the company nears the planned separation of its Flash business, set for completion on February 21, 2025. CEO Designate Irving Tan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable storage solutions at scale, emphasizing its leadership in HDD innovation and its strong partnerships with hyperscale cloud providers, CSPs, and OEMs.

Western Digital remains a key player in the evolving data storage landscape, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR), conventional magnetic recording (CMR) HDDs, UltraSMR, and heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). As artificial intelligence continues to shape industry demands, Tan projected that growing AI applications—including text-to-image and text-to-video generation—will drive an estimated 23% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in HDD exabyte shipments from 2024 to 2028. The overall volume of stored data is expected to triple between 2023 and 2028.

To address this growing demand, Western Digital is accelerating HAMR technology development and has begun testing it with two major hyperscale customers. With its scalable ePMR and UltraSMR technologies, the company aims to provide customers with long-term storage solutions that ensure cost efficiency and seamless scalability.

Tan emphasized that Western Digital is not only advancing HDD technology but also unlocking greater value for enterprise and cloud storage customers. The company continues to explore new growth opportunities in areas such as servo-mechanics, magnetics, and systems design, leveraging its expertise in physics, material sciences, and manufacturing.
