UAE Motorists Call for Improved Road Safety Amid Rising Concerns Over Dangerous Driving and Commute Times

11th Cycle of ‘UAE Road Safety Monitor’ Reveals Key Trends

The 11th cycle of the ‘UAE Road Safety Monitor’ highlights mixed sentiments among UAE motorists regarding road safety and driving conditions. While 77% of respondents commend the UAE government for ongoing road infrastructure improvements, this figure marks a 6% drop compared to January 2024, reflecting growing concerns about other aspects of road safety.

The study, commissioned by Al Wathba Insurance in partnership with RoadSafetyUAE and conducted by YouGov with a representative sample of 1,031 UAE motorists, has been tracking driving perceptions since 2015.

Key Findings:

  1. Perception of Dangerous Driving:

    • 52% of motorists strongly agree or agree that traffic has become more dangerous, a 7% increase since January 2024, and the fourth-highest value recorded across all cycles.
  2. Reckless Driving Behaviors:
While still prevalent, positive trends were noted compared to January 2024:

    • Distracted Driving: 61% (-1%)
    • Speeding: 60% (-3%)
    • Tailgating: 55% (-3%)
    • Lane Swerving: 58% (-3%)
  3. Commute Times and Driving Enjoyment:

    • 62% of respondents reported increased commute times, a 6% rise, marking the second-highest value observed over 11 cycles.
    • Driving enjoyment dropped by 8%, with 63% of respondents noting less satisfaction behind the wheel.
  4. Accident Rates:

    • 31% of respondents admitted to being involved in an accident in the last six months, the second-highest figure in the study’s history.
