UAE Ministry of Education Updates Educational Streams for Cycle 3 Students Starting Academic Year 2025–2026
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced a major update to the educational streams for Cycle 3 students in public schools and private schools that follow the Ministry’s curriculum. Set to take effect from the 2025–2026 academic year, the new structure aims to better align education with students’ future aspirations, university readiness, and labour market demands.
Announced during a media briefing at the MoE’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the update was presented in the presence of Her Excellency Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education; HE Eng. Mohammed Al-Qasim, Undersecretary of MoE; and other ministry officials and national media representatives.
Aligning Education with Career Pathways
The updated structure is the result of extensive field studies and surveys involving educational experts and parents. The Ministry explained that the redesign of the general and advanced streams reflects emerging trends among students and aims to create a smoother transition from secondary education to higher education and eventually to professional careers.
Under the new model:
-
The General Stream will provide foundational education in scientific subjects to help students develop critical skills and talents, supporting progression into fields such as humanities, literature, business administration, law, social sciences, arts, and police sciences.
-
The Advanced Stream will offer a deeper focus on scientific subjects to prepare students for university degrees in engineering, medicine, sciences, and pharmacy.
Clearer Pathways and Support Systems
The MoE clarified that the updates will not affect the academic plans of current Grade 11 and 12 students. Additionally, Grade 12 students in the general stream will be allowed to replace physics with one of the optional subjects outlined in a recently issued Ministry guide.
For Grade 8 students, selecting the appropriate stream has become a strategic decision tied to their university goals. A new registration mechanism has been put in place for enrollment into the advanced stream, alongside clear conditions and guidelines.
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with higher education institutions across the UAE to ensure alignment with university admission requirements and evolving market needs. A detailed guide for students and parents has been released to explain the changes, highlighting the essential role of school counsellors in supporting students' academic decisions.
Supporting Educators and Students
To accompany the reform, the Ministry has introduced academic frameworks and guidelines aimed at helping teachers and administrators deliver enhanced educational planning. These updates are designed to equip students with the knowledge and support necessary to make informed decisions about their future academic and professional paths.
