Tawam Hospital is the only institution in the UAE with a working Brachytherapy system

Al Ain, UAE, 23 April, 2014: As a premier UAE medical institution and national referral center for oncology services, Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine and part of the SEHA healthcare system, today announced the availability of new state-of-the-art digital Brachytherapy system to provide a more effective treatment to cancer patients. To date, Tawam Hospital is the only institution in the UAE with a working Brachytherapy system.

Brachytherapy is commonly used as an effective treatment for cervical, uterine, prostate, breast and skin cancer. The system works by directing targeted radiation to shrink tumors. Radioactive sources are aimed at or near the tumor itself, providing a high radiation dose to the tumor while reducing the radiation exposure in the surrounding healthy tissues.

The new system, which replaces the old, provides more treatment capabilities and allows for fewer side effects and is done in much shorter time. On top of the new Brachytherapy system, Tawam is also renovating the Brachytherapy Suite adding more patient monitors and communication systems.

Brachytherapy is one of the unique services that we offer here in the Oncology Centre. Patients suffering from varied types of cancer can rely on our Brachytherapy and need not also suffer from longer treatment periods. Depending on the case of the patients, Brachytherapy can be used alone or in combination with other therapies such as surgery, External Beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and chemotherapy. But to patients suffering from cancer, Brachytherapy offers a ray of hope in beating their diseases, said Dr. Kahled Balaraj, Chairman of Radiology at Tawam Hospital.

With the advanced and digital Brachytherapy system of Tawam, we are also upgrading the suite to offer more comfort and convenience to cancer patients who come for treatment. The modernization of our Oncology Centre, through the acquisition of the latest Brachytherapy system and renovation of our Brachytherapy suite are just some of the ways Tawam Hospital underlines its commitment in providing the best medical care for cancer patients, said Eng. Mohammed Al Jaberi, Acting Facilities Director at Tawam Hospital.

Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA Health System owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
