H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Al Sharqi Attends the Launch of the 4th Fujairah International Philosophy Conference and Affirms the Role of Critique in Arab Cultural History
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, inaugurated the fourth edition of the Fujairah International Philosophy Conference on November 21, 2024, underscoring the significant role of critique in Arab cultural history, particularly within literature, philosophy, and thought.
Speaking at the event, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the vital role that critique plays in promoting intellectual freedom, mutual understanding, and societal awareness. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking, dialogue, and analysis in fostering the development of human thought and the advancement of culture.
Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed and organized by the Philosophy House in Fujairah, the conference coincided with World Philosophy Day and centered on the theme "Philosophical Critique."
H.H. also reaffirmed the Fujairah government's commitment to enhancing the role of intellectual thought and culture in society, in alignment with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah. The Crown Prince emphasized the government's focus on establishing a knowledge-based society by empowering individuals and encouraging future generations to value intellectual growth. These efforts are integral to the UAE’s broader goals of national progress and global competitiveness.
Additionally, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed called for fostering global intellectual and cultural dialogue. He emphasized the significance of exchanging knowledge, ideas, and experiences on philosophical topics that advance human thought and contribute to enriching discussions on key global issues.
The Crown Prince expressed his appreciation for the conference’s programme, acknowledging the contributions of participants in sessions, discussions, and activities. He praised their efforts in making the conference a resounding success, aimed at furthering the advancement of culture and philosophy.
The opening ceremony featured a welcome address by Dr. Ahmed Barqawi, Dean of the Philosophy House, who also presented a visual history of the evolution of philosophical critique. Professor Purushottama Bilimoria, faculty member at the University of San Francisco, delivered an insightful speech on the significance of philosophical critique from various cultural perspectives.
The conference commenced with two key sessions. The first featured a lecture by Dr. Barqawi on the nature of philosophical critique, followed by a session led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghathami, a prominent thinker, on cultural critique. The session, chaired by Dr. Sulaiman Al Hattlan, examined the distinctions and intersections between philosophical and cultural critique, emphasizing their relevance and comprehensive scope.
The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, Director of the Office of His Highness the Crown Prince of Fujairah, as well as distinguished philosophers, academics, intellectuals, and individuals with an interest in philosophical affairs from around the world.
