Help AG’s 2024 State of the Market Report Highlights Accelerated Cyber Defense Investments in GCC
Help AG, an e& enterprise company and a trusted cybersecurity advisor in the Middle East, has released the 2024 edition of its annual State of the Market Report. Focused exclusively on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the report is the definitive guide on cybersecurity trends, threats, and emerging technologies in the region.
For the fourth consecutive year, Help AG’s report provides unparalleled insights into cybersecurity dynamics over the past year, detailing threat tactics, high-profile breaches, and best practices. It includes contributions from Help AG, strategic partners, and leading organizations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Key Investment Trends
The report highlights notable cybersecurity investment trends in the GCC, pinpointing top investment areas and market directions. In 2023, cyber defense investments surged amid ongoing digital transformation. There was a marked acceleration in the consolidation of cybersecurity spending, with an increase of over 100% in the past year. This trend reflects a growing preference for consuming cybersecurity as a service, with a focus on clear deliverables, service level agreements (SLAs), key performance indicators (KPIs), and transparent costs.
Investments in managed cyber defense skyrocketed due to the increasing complexity of the digital threat landscape. Services like network detection and response, endpoint detection and response, threat intelligence, digital risk protection, and incident response saw heightened investment. This indicates a proactive approach to comprehensive threat management and protection.
The adoption of cloud services continues to grow, with a shift towards "Everything as a Service" (EaaS), encompassing major digital transformation initiatives and endpoint security. Cybersecurity advisory services also saw a 100% growth, driven by regulatory compliance requirements.
Additionally, Help AG has prioritized investment in people, processes, and technology, launching the largest cyber defense center in the UAE and expanding its center in Riyadh.
Top Cyber Threats
In the increasingly connected digital landscape, attackers target organizations' availability, reputation, and customer trust, leading to financial losses and operational disruptions. The report features an in-depth analysis of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in the UAE, noting a 42% increase in DDoS incidents in 2023.
Among nearly 30,000 critical digital risk alerts identified by Help AG in 2023, the dominant risks were credential theft (49%) and brand abuse (39%). The cyber threat landscape also saw a rise in advanced ransomware, double extortion, phishing, and application layer attacks.
Technology Trends for 2024 and Beyond
The report highlights that automation and integration are crucial for efficient cybersecurity strategies. Help AG has leveraged automation to manage customer incident information from a single console, saving over 500 hours of human effort per month. AI-powered cyber defense is emphasized, where intelligent automation analyzes large datasets for anomalies.
Despite increased investments, the cybersecurity industry faces a talent gap, with many positions remaining unfilled. Help AG's Managed Security Services (MSS) Graduate Program aims to address this by providing intensive training for young talents.
Identity & Data Protection
As digital transformation expands, adopting Identity Security Immunity principles and a holistic approach to data protection is essential. This involves proactive defense, adaptive responses, and seamless integration with existing security infrastructure.
Application Security
Securing modern applications requires a proactive approach, prioritizing security from the earliest development stages through ongoing management.
OT & IoT Security
Securing operational technology (OT) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) environments requires a multifaceted approach tailored to industrial networks and connected devices.
Zero Trust Secure Access Service Edge (SASE)
Embracing Zero Trust SASE is becoming imperative for organizations, combining SASE’s flexibility with zero-trust principles for robust security.
