Georgia Joins FIA's Global Fight Against Online Abuse in Sports

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), has welcomed the Government of Georgia as the latest nation to join the FIA's United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) coalition, a growing global initiative aimed at tackling online harassment in the sporting world.

Georgia becomes the tenth national government to formally endorse the UAOA Charter, which was signed by the country’s Minister of Sport, Mr. Shalva Gogoladze, during a meeting with Ben Sulayem over the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.

The United Against Online Abuse campaign, founded by Ben Sulayem in 2022, seeks to address the rising threat of online hate, promoting mental well-being, inclusivity, and safety for athletes, officials, and fans. Backed by the FIA Foundation, the coalition includes governments, sporting organizations, and technology platforms, working together to shape strategies that combat online abuse.

During their meeting, the FIA President and the Georgian Minister discussed shared priorities including the Minister’s ‘Start to Talk’ initiative, which focuses on improving the reporting of harassment and abuse in sport. They also explored opportunities for collaboration on policy-making, data sharing, and hosting future UAOA events and conferences.

Commenting on the development, Ben Sulayem stated: “I am delighted to welcome the Government of Georgia to the United Against Online Abuse coalition. This endorsement underscores Georgia’s leadership in recognising online abuse as a serious threat to the future of sport. Together, we are building a strong, global alliance that will deliver meaningful change and make sport a safer space for everyone.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Gogoladze added: “Georgia is honoured to stand with our international partners in the fight against online abuse in sport. Signing the United Against Online Abuse Charter reflects our unwavering commitment to promoting safety, respect, and mental wellbeing for all athletes, coaches, officials, and fans. We are proud to support this global movement established by the FIA and to play our part in creating a sporting culture that thrives on safety and inclusivity, both on and off the field.”

The UAOA campaign has gained international recognition and was recently awarded the Peace and Sport Coalition for Peace Award for its impactful and research-driven approach in fostering safe and respectful sporting environments.
