Gartner's 2024 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies Emphasizes AI, Developer Productivity, and Human-Centric Security

Gartner, Inc. has released its 2024 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, spotlighting 25 disruptive technologies across four key areas: autonomous AI, developer productivity, total experience, and human-centric security and privacy programs. These technologies, which have the potential to deliver transformational benefits over the next two to ten years, are essential for business leaders to consider in their strategic planning.

Arun Chandrasekaran, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, noted that while Generative AI (GenAI) has surpassed the Peak of Inflated Expectations, the focus is now shifting towards practical use cases that deliver return on investment (ROI). This shift is accelerating the development of autonomous AI, which, though still in its early stages, shows promise in dynamic interaction and decision-making in complex environments.

“While AI continues to dominate discussions, CIOs and IT executives must also explore other emerging technologies that can transform developer productivity, security, and customer and employee experiences. These technologies should be integrated into strategies that align with the organization’s capacity to manage unproven innovations,” Chandrasekaran stated.

The Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies is unique in its ability to distill insights from over 2,000 technologies and frameworks that Gartner profiles annually. It identifies must-know emerging technologies that business leaders should track closely.

Key Emerging Technology Trends in 2024:

  1. Autonomous AI: This rapidly evolving technology is producing AI systems capable of operating with minimal human oversight and improving their decision-making abilities. Technologies such as multiagent systems, large action models, humanoid robots, and reinforcement learning are moving closer to real-world applications.

  2. Boosting Developer Productivity: Developer productivity extends beyond coding speed to include effective communication, collaboration, and maintaining a flow state. Emerging technologies like AI-augmented software engineering, cloud-native development, GitOps, and WebAssembly are enhancing the developer experience and improving software quality.

  3. Empowering Total Experience: Total experience strategies combine customer, employee, multiexperience, and user experience practices to create superior shared experiences. Technologies to watch in this area include digital twins of customers, spatial computing, superapps, and 6G.

  4. Human-Centric Security and Privacy: As organizations aim to build resilience, they are focusing on security and privacy practices that foster trust and mutual risk awareness. Technologies supporting this approach include AI TRiSM, cybersecurity mesh architecture, digital immune systems, and federated machine learning.

Gartner clients can delve deeper into these insights in the “Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2024” report. Further analysis will be provided at the upcoming Gartner CIO & IT Executive Conferences in São Paulo (September 23-25) and Dubai (November 19-21).
