Dubai City

Initially a tiny fishing negotiation, Dubai was taken control of in the 18th century by a branch of the Bani Yas tribe led by the Maktoum household that still rule the emirate today. At that time the common modes of acquiring food were herding sheep and goats, growing dates, fishing and pearling. However, the liberal attitude of the leaders made the emirate appealing to investors from India and Iran. In 1971, joining together with Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and (in 1972) Ras Al Khaimah formed the federation of the United Arab Emirates.

Exploration of oil in the 1960's laid the foundation for today's modern culture. Dubai has a sub-tropical arid climate with infrequent rainfall. Temperature range in between 10 degrees C and 48 degrees C. The official language is Arabic. In matters of business, English and Arabic are both used.

The city is located on the banks of Creek, an all-natural salt water inlet puncturing the center of the city. Central business is separated into two parts. Deira gets on the northern side and Bur Dubai remains in the south, attached by a passage and two bridges. Each has its share of business centers, shopping malls, resorts, property and commercial facilities, health centers and schools.

Several of the traveler spots worth mentioning are designed public gardens on the Bur side of Dubai; a bird shelter near a shallow shallows at the inland end of the Creek which attracts moving shore birds; the Wild Wadi theme park including 23 water flights and a fake thunderstorm; Ski Dubai, an interior ski resort; desert safaris; Sundower dune dinner (dinner theatre); the Gold Souk, the renowned buying area; Sheikh Saeed home (previous house of the ruling family members); and the gallery situated at Al Fahidi fort.
